2022 Sunshine State Games Updates and Registration Information – 04/27/22

Registration continues for over 20 sports in the 2022 Sunshine State Games, presented by Amazon. The 2022 calendar features 25 sports, with multi-sport Festivals held in four Florida communities and 22 facilities statewide hosting the events.

For competition and registration information, athletes can check the individual sports pages at the Sunshine State Games website, or find the “Register Now,” button on the top right corner of the page.

Judo Information now Updated and Posted

A sport that has been on the Sunshine State Games roster since the Games inception in 1980, returns after a two-year absence when Judo is held at the AdventHealth Field House and Conference Center, in Winter Haven, on Saturday, June 18.

The Winter Haven facility, a multi-purpose building with over 58,000 square feet, which opened in January, 2020, is hosting a Sunshine State Games event for the first time. The multi-use gymnasium will also host the SSG Taekwondo competition the same weekend.

The last Judo championships were held at the Tomodachi Judo Club at Congress Middle School, in Boynton Beach, on June 21, 2019. 

Disc Golf Registration Link Now Posted

Being held for the second consecutive year during the Clay County Festival, Disc Golf returns to Ronnie Van Zant Memorial Park for two days of competition.  Doubles competition is scheduled for Friday evening, June 10 and singles on Saturday morning, June 12.

The course in Green Cove Springs is described on the Professional Disc Golf Association website as “woodsy,” in a “medium density forest.”  The course is listed with a total length of 10,377 feet with 20 hole lengths under 300 feet and 16 holes between 300 and 400 feet.

More than 40 players registered to compete in the 2021 event, the first time Disc Golf has been offered in the Sunshine State Games since 2015, in Sarasota.

Record Number of Figure Skaters to be on the Ice at 34th SSG Figure Skating Championships

With registration now closed for the 2022 Sunshine State Games Figure Skating Championships, a total of 413 skaters will compete the weekend of May 20-22, at the Florida Panthers Ice Den in Coral Springs.  The 400+ skaters marks a record high participation level in the 34 year history of the event.

“We will be busy that weekend,” said SSG Figure Skating sport director, Betty Stark, of Coral Springs.

The last SSG Figure Skating Championships was held in 2019 with nearly 300 skaters competing at AdventHealth Center Ice, in Wesley Chapel, May 17-19, 2021

Among those registered to compete are the 2019 Dorothy Dodson Award winner Lauren Lampinen and Jordon Scott, the 2018 and 2019 Betty Stark Award Winner.  The Dodson Award, presented annually since 2009, recognizes the highest combined point in the Intermediate Ladies Free Skate and Short Program.  The Stark Award recognizes the Juvenile Girl with the highest point total in the Free Skate Program and has been presented since 2015.

Registration is also closed for Artistic Roller Skating, with 114 athletes, competing, Sunday, May 8 at the Semoran Skateway in Casselberry.  Athletes beginning with 7-year old Kyla Everall from Florida Skating Academy, New Port Richey, will lace up the skates.  On the other end of the age range is 88-year old Joe Villane, from the Skating School of Central Florida, in Casselberry.  

Who’s Registered to Compete in the 2022 Sunshine State Games
Finally, with registration numbers continuing to grow. we’ll take a look at “Who’s Registered to Compete in the 2022 Sunshine State Games, presented by Amazon.” This week features Tallahassee Artistic Swimmer, Mia Stout, one of 14 members of the Tallahassee Serinas team, registered to compete the weekend of June 3-5, at the Gandy Pool in Lakeland.

Stout pulled double duty during the 2021 Sunshine State Games, swimming for the Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club, June 4-6, at the Dwight Hunter Northeast Pool, in Gainesville, and returned the following weekend to swim for the Serinas, at the University of Florida Natatorium.

She won two silver medals and a bronze in Artistic Swimming, while competing in the 13-15 Age Group Figures, Solo Free, Team Free and Duet Free events.  She finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in the swim meet.  Both events had over 20 swimmers in the 13-14 year old age group.

49 Days in May and June Features Plenty of Sunshine State Games Events
Now in its 43rd year of providing amateur sports opportunities to Florida athletes of all ages, the Sunshine State Games has been used as a stepping-stone to national and international competitions by many Florida athletes.

For the 2022 Games, between May 8 and June 26, multi-sport festivals will be held in four Florida locations, Alachua, Broward, Clay and Polk counties.  Alachua, Broward and Polk have long histories of hosting Sunshine State Games events, while Clay County is now in its second year of hosting events in Northeast Florida.

Registration fees vary by sport as well as registration deadlines.  Please check the individual sport registration deadlines listed below.

The Sunshine State Games, presented by Amazon, are an annual presentation of the Florida Sports Foundation, the official sports promotion and development organization of the State of Florida.  The Games are held in conjunction with local partners that include, Central Florida’s Polk County Sports Marketing, Clay County Tourism, the Gainesville Sports Commission and Visit Lauderdale.  Now in its 43rd year, the Sunshine State Games are the longest continually-running State Games in the U.S.
